BIOGRAPHY
Piotr Lachert was born on 5 September 1938 in Warsaw.
He graduated from the High School of Music in Warsaw in 1957 and then continued his training with Professor Jan Ekier at the Warsaw Academy of Music, graduating in 1961. From 1964 to 1965 he trained with Maestro Vlado Permuter. In 1966 he attended the Maria Wilkomirska virtousity course in Lodè and in 1967 he enrolled at the Hoghschule für Musik in Hannover under Professor Reimar Dahlgrün. In 1969 he completed his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels with Professor Luis Poulet.
In 1967 he left Poland for Germany, where he lived for a year in Hannover. In 1968/69 he moved to Brussels with his sister, Hanna Lachert. There he met his first wife, Angèle Albrecht, Maurice Béjart’s star dancer.
A few years later, he met Annette Sachs, a trained pianist, who became his second wife. From this union Piotr Lachert’s first son, Fryderyk de Peslin Lachert, was born. Together, Piotr Lachert and Annette Sachs toured the world presenting their various musical theatre shows and performances. At the Maestro’s instigation, Annette Sachs developed a passion for the clavichord, which they revived together. In 1971, H.R.H. King Baudoin granted Piotr Lachert Belgian nationality.
In 1992, the Maestro met Valentina Chiola, also a pianist, whom he made his third wife and whom he followed to Pescara in Italy. Their second son, Victor de Peslin Lachert, was born.
They programmed countless cultural events and founded Kamerton and Chiola Music Press, respectively an artists’ association and a publishing house
Annette Sachs
Since his early childhood, Piotr Lachert has been studying the piano at an impressive pace. He quickly established himself in Poland as one of the most talented young musicians of his generation.
In 1961, at the age of 23, he won third place in the prestigious Paderewski Piano Competition Bydgoszcz. By 1969, he had already given more than 300 recitals.
He collaborated and played with many contemporary artists, including his sister, the excellent violinist Hanna Lachert, who played with the New Philharmonic Orchestra in New York for over 30 years.
He also worked with Rubenstein and Martha Argerish, who had a great influence on his work, and as an accompanying pianist with Maurice Béjart, whose first wife, Angèle Albrecht, was one of the star dancers.
Despite a more than promising future as a soloist, it was composition that attracted the young Piotr Lachert and made him truly vibrant.
The events of May 1968 opened up an unhoped-for path for him, that of being able to make a tabula rasa of the past and offer him a free hand to express himself. Reinventing musical language was the mission of this new generation of composers.
So, together with Boudewijn Buckinx, Dominique Lawalrée and Alain Van Kerckhoven, he launched New Consonant Music. This postmodernist musical movement is based on the premise that there is a real divorce between contemporary music composers and their audience, sometimes because of the revolution in musical language, abandoning traditional forms for a resolutely open work (such as John Cage, for example), and sometimes because of rigid compositional systems that make a clean sweep of the past (integral serialism, post-serialism).
The new consonants therefore seek to revive the so-called ‘classical’ musical tradition while resolutely pursuing an evolutionary perspective. No compositional characteristics are imposed. The music can therefore be tonal or atonal. The fundamental basis of the movement is to think of itself as a mode of communication that cannot develop without taking its audience into account.
Over the years, Piotr Lachert composed an impressive number of works: 31 sonatas, 2 operas, 10 musicals, 6 concertos, 6 symphonic works, 8 works for voice and a large number of varied forms for piano and chamber music, as well as several lyrical works. He also wrote various compositions for forgotten or little-known instruments to which he gave a second life, such as the clavichord or the guzheng.
Among his most original works is ‘Letter Music’ from 1982, which was created with the help of a computer program he designed, through which the computer itself completes a composition, but the framework is predefined by the composer.
In 2014, Piotr Lachert composed the astonishing ‘Divertimento Maclé’, a concerto for 4-bar piano and 60-piano orchestra. This major composition, performed for the first time the same year in Italy, received special praise from the international music community.
His rich, original and particularly technical work is acclaimed worldwide. He is played in countless festivals and concerts, from Japan to Brazil, via Russia, Australia, the United States, Israel and all European countries. His scores are published by a dozen different publishers in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.

Piotr Lachert soon became a teacher and taught piano didactics. He was successively professor at the conservatories of Hanover, Brussels and Pescara.
In the 1970s, the Maestro was one of the first musicians to found the new ‘Creativity’ trend in piano teaching. This teaching offers an open alternative to the formalism of traditional music teaching. Creativity’ opposes the many constraints and excessive demands with freedom, pleasure and originality. The results are immediate, with thousands of beginners, amateurs and professionals joining in.
Piotr Lachert crystallised this new trend in his Creative Method, a pedagogical work which, even today, is a reference for piano teachers. It was presented at the ISME (International Society for Music Education) Congress in Montreal and Sydney, and at the European Piano Teachers Association in Berlin, Antwerp and Rome. Between 1980 and 2005, Piotr Lachert gave more than 300 master classes in various European countries.
In 2010, he launched Piano Lachert, an online learning method divided into 15 lessons that combines speed of learning, gradual and progressive communication of didactic information and pleasure linked to the personal choice of musical aesthetics (classical music, jazz, rock, blues etc.). Once again, the lessons were a success: several thousand people downloaded them.
Piotr Lachert was one of the first artists in Belgium to write music theatre, a provocative genre that followed the liberation movement of May 68. The aim is to get in touch with the audience, who find themselves, as if by magic, involved in a completely unexpected and surprising performance.
In this art form, there are no boundaries. The artists recite, sing, dance, play and express themselves freely. Many objects are also used to provoke reactions from the audience, who leave the performance feeling challenged and thoughtful.
The success is dazzling and he participates in countless festivals throughout the world (Mexico, Korea, Russia, Europe, Iran, the United States, etc.). He represented Belgium twice at the renowned ‘International Society For Contemporary Music’ during the World Music Day in Bonn in 1977 and in Brussels in 1981. At the latter, the jury – composed of Philippe Boesmans, Helmut Lachenmann, Andre Laporte, Reinbert de Leeuw, Luis de Pablo and Frederic Rzewski – awarded him third prize.
During this period, Piotr Lachert collaborated with many artists and composers, including his second wife, Annette Sachs, Godfried-Willem Raes, Moniek Darge, Andrew Siwi, Dunja Robotti, Dominique Grosjean and Mireille Gleizes.
In addition to the various components described above, Piotr Lachert has also been active in many other artistic fields.
He paints, writes poetry and essays. He is also the author of several books published by various publishing houses, such as Noi Pianiste or Adda una saga abbruzze.
He also gives atypical and impressive performances. One example is City Music – a musical journey through a city in which each resident plays a specific melody composed by the Maestro through his window, so that as he walks through the streets, he can hear the music of the city, Centri Storici in Musica – which he created with his third wife, Valentina Chiola, and which consisted, for 10 years, of organising classical music concerts in the historic and remote villages of central Italy.
